Lash painting is a makeup artist–loved technique that uses a fan brush instead of a traditional mascara wand to literally paint mascara onto your lashes for a clump-free, defined finish. According to New York makeup artist, Natalie Dresher, this method is no secret to the makeup professionals of the world. "I actually love using a fan brush on clients because it gives a non-clumpy look while perfectly coating and separating the lashes," she says. "I especially love using the fan brush on the bottom lashes because those can get clumpy and spidery looking fast."
The key to lash painting is precision. A fan brush offers more control and precision than a traditional mascara wand, letting you evenly coat every lash. "Making sure the brush is coated evenly on the front and back and then swiping the lashes from the top then really concentrating on the bottom part of the lashes like you would a traditional mascara wand," Dresher explains. "A fan brush is a must when dealing with lighter colored lashes and black mascara, or any mascara where the difference between the natural lash and makeup is very noticeable because the fan brush really ensures the lashes are evenly coated!"
