Dry shampoos have been saving day-old blowouts one head of hair at a time ever since they became available. Now, they’re basically household staples. But the word “dry” can make us feel a little nervous about using it on our hair. That’s why, this week we’re busting myths about dry shampoo.
In response to a previous post about dry shampoos, Cynthia asks, I have been looking for a dry shampoo for some time. This product sounds great, but I have dry hair. Will it dry out my hair?
“Dry shampoo will not dry your hair out, but it does absorb some of the natural oils from the hair shaft and scalp,” says New York City celebrity hair colorist Marie Robinson. To avoid dehydrating your hair, do not use it more than once in between washes. Another good reason to limit your use, dry shampoo can clog follicles and prevent hair growth.
Jillian also asks, I have been using dry shampoo for quite a while-I am starting to notice a lot more options and am having a hard time choosing. How do I pick?
When it comes to choosing a dry shampoo, it depends on your hair type and what kind of holding power you want. “Some dry shampoos have a sticky or tackiness so it has hold besides giving body. Other dry shampoos are simply powdery and will just absorb hair oils that flatten your day old blow dry.”
As for your hair color, it may actually be beneficial to use dry shampoo. By washing your hair less, your color should last longer because you’re not pulling out the color molecules with water.
