“I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no ex-planation.”

Comedian Amy Schumer faced a wave of public scrutiny following her recent media appearances to promote her show, "Life and Beth." Viewers took to social media to comment on what they perceived as a "puffy" face, with some speculating about plastic surgery. In response, Schumer took to Instagram to set the record straight.

"Binge both full seasons of @lifeandbethhulu and thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face!,” she wrote. “I’ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years. And you’re right, it is puffier than normal right now. I have endometriosis, an autoimmune disease that every woman should read about. There are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now, but I’m okay."

Endometriosis and Swelling

The exact mechanisms of how endometriosis causes these symptoms are not fully understood. It is believed to be related to the overactive response by the immune system to endometrial cells outside the uterus. This can lead to a puffy face due to water retention and swelling, which are symptoms associated with the condition.

No Explanation Needed

Schumer has been candid about her battle with endometriosis, labeling it a "lonely disease.” In her message, she highlighted the disparity in medical research between men and women. "Historically, women’s bodies have barely been studied medically compared to men," she noted.

Yet, amidst the discussion, Schumer injected her trademark humor, poking fun at the absurdity of her face becoming the headline of the day. "I had backup dancers on Fallon but my face is the headline," she quipped.

But perhaps the most powerful aspect of Schumer's post was her declaration that women shouldn’t have to explain themselves. "I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation." A fact we wholeheartedly agree with.
