Anti-aging is one of, if not, the biggest concerns when it comes to skin care, and some ingredients are better at it than others. We asked dermatologists what they consider to be the ingredients with the best anti-aging benefits. Next time you’re shopping for a new step in your anti-aging skin-care routine, look for these ingredients.

Retinoids

Retinoids

This is the ingredient we were all expecting to land on this list. Retinoids, including retinol and Retin A, “have a long, well-studied history of effective anti-aging. While many other ingredients have come and gone, they persist,” says West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD. “They're also the cornerstone because they work at so many levels.” Retinoids work by accelerating cell turnover, explains Aventura, FL dermatologist Dr. Bertha Baum.

You can get a prescription-strength product through your dermatologist if you’re a candidate. Otherwise, Dr. Beer recommends Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Cream + Hyaluronic Acid ($28) and Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 + Peptide Night Face Moisturizer Cream ($30).

The importance of sunscreen cannot be overstated when it comes to skin health and preventing the signs of aging on the skin. Dr. Baum notes that sun damage is one of the most common reasons we see signs of aging. “Tinted mineral sunscreen is my favorite because it also helps protect skin if you suffer from hyperpigmentation,” says Dr. Baum.

Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol

Chapel Hill, NC dermatologist Beth Goldstein, MD is a fan of the trending bakuchiol, a natural alternative to retinol. She notes that it’s often less irritating than traditional retinoids, so it’s more easily tolerated while giving the same results like improving skin tone and texture. Dr. Goldstein recommends OLEHENRIKSEN Goodnight Glow Bakuchiol Sleeping Crème ($60) and ISDIN Melatonik ($165).
