Last February, we told you about Sheyla Hershey, a Texas resident who wanted the largest breasts in the world and had to go to her country of birth, Brazil, in order to receive over a gallon of silicone because American plastic surgeons would not perform such a dangerous augmentation. Now, Hershey is in the hospital again, not for another of almost a dozen revisions, but to undergo life-saving surgery.
Several news outlets are reporting that the otherwise petite 30-year-old mother is suffering from staph infections in both breasts, which could spread to her bloodstream and have fatal results. It is believed that with each expansion of the breast pocket, squeezing in huge implants could have led to dihescence, a reopening of her incisions that could allow infectious bacteria to enter.
Even if such a serious side effect hadn’t occurred, Hershey could have eventually dealt with numerous other issues, from capsular contracture to back problems or extreme sagging. But this particular complication means doctors will likely have to remove not only her implants, but at least some of her natural breast tissue, leaving her with smaller breasts than she began with.
“Today, I realize after this problem I’m going through, it wasn’t worth it,” she told the Fox News affiliate in Houston before her surgery, claiming she wouldn’t do it again if she had the chance. “I realize that what I’ve done to myself is wrong.”
