What is an A-line bob?
“An A-line bob is a haircut that is anywhere from [a] short chin length bob to a lob (long bob) in length and goes from shorter in the back to longer in the front, creating the Shape of an ‘A,'” explains celebrity stylist and John Frieda ambassador, DJ Quintero. “The perimeter of the cut is usually blunt and precise.”
A versatile look, the A-line bob can be worn wavy or straight, with a sharp or more subtle angle.
“The type of angle can vary, from subtle to dramatic, depending on your personal style and preference!” explains celebrity hairstylist and Moroccanoil ambassador, Dimitris Giannetos.
Who should get an A-line bob?
If you’d like to create the illusion of more fullness in the front of fine hair, Quintero says the A-line cut could be perfect for you.
“I think anyone who is trying to show off a great jawline or a longer neck—this cut is made for you,” Quintero says. “This cut is also great for girls with finer hair or hair that may be finer around the front. The cut creates an optical illusion by pushing hair towards the face, and the blunt ends make any hair look fuller.”
And of course, the style can be personalized to bring out your features and complement your face shape.
“This cut works best for round or square face shapes,” Giannetos notes. “The longer front sections help elongate the face and soften strong jawlines, however, it can be tailored to suit different face shapes when you adjust the length and styling—make sure to ask your stylist what looks best!”
The Perfect Aesthetics for the A-Line Bob
Whether you’re a French girl or a mob wife, the A-line bob is a look that can easily embody several major aesthetic trends.
“This cut has been around for decades, the ‘French bob’ in [the] ’20s (think Louise Brooks) and the ‘Mod Bob’ which was again reinvented in the ’60s when Vidal Sassoon made it popular,” explains Quintero. “This timeless cut has been proven to show that a good chop every once in a while will suit anyone who is ready for a major change. Chris McMillian’s A-Line cut on Leslie Bibb on White Lotus is a perfect example of this cut today and like I said, I don’t think the A-Line bob will ever go away or out of style as it suits so many people, so well.”
If you’re attracted to the clean girl or mob wife trends, Giannetos recommends keeping your A-line bob straight and sleek. “Soft waves, on the other hand, create a relaxed French girl vibe,” he says. “And a deep side part with a glossy finish leans into old money elegance.”
