The beauty industry constantly introduces new trends, new products, and even the introduction of new platforms (hello, TikTok). However, the importance of an effective skin-care routine has always remained the same.

Troy, MI plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD took to TikTok to share his take on what “A Simple ‘Clean’ Morning Skincare Routine” should look like. The best part? He incorporates products that won’t break the bank.

Step One: Cleanse

Thoroughly cleansing the skin works to remove oil, dirt, makeup and any other impurities from the skin. Cleansing is also crucial for creating a clean canvas before the application of any skin-care products, as it makes for a more effective application.

Dr. Youn recommends using Cetaphil Gentle Foaming Cleanser ($8), a mild cleanser that is infused with skin-conditioning ingredients and a vitamin complex (vitamins B5 and E) to remove dirt, oil and makeup without leaving skin feeling tight or dry.

Step Two: Antioxidant Serum

Antioxidants are important addition to any skin-care routine because they work to protect the skin by shielding against free-radical damage. Common antioxidants include vitamins A, C and E. Over time, antioxidant-boosted serums also help to soften wrinkles as well as repair sun damage. Dr. Youn recommends Acure Brightening Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid Serum ($20); SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic ($166) is a great medical-grade option, as well.

Step Three: SPF

Any skin expert will tell you that in the journey to younger-looking skin, sunscreen is a non-negotiable. SPF protects the skin from harmful UV rays and sun damage, therefore reducing the risk of premature aging, and the risk of skin cancer. As Dr. Youn mentions in his video, an SPF of 30 or more is recommended for proper protection. La Roche-Posay Dry Touch Sunscreen ($20) is an oil-free formula (making it ideal for acneic skin) and boasts an SPF of 60, ensuring your skin will be properly protected for the day ahead.

The Bottom Line: Regardless of your skin-care budget, taking great care of your complexion is doable at any price-range—even plastic surgeons agree.
