As with anything in the body-refining space, technologies continue to improve with time. “The more we use these modalities, the more we learn about better results by working with depth and penetration while still being safe,” says Las Vegas plastic surgeon Terrence Higgins, MD. Here’s what the next generation of fat fighters is bound to look like.
An injectable that breaks up fat
We’ve been patiently waiting for the FDA-approval of ATX-101, and our sources say that it may come soon. Making use of a fat-reducing solution, it is injected directly into the fat under the chin to break it up, melt it and then flush it out of the body. “This is probably the biggest product that will come out because it’s different from anything else out there,” says Dallas plastic surgeon Jeffrey Kenkel, MD. “We’ve never had a legitimate injectable that works on submental fat.”
Combining up to three different technologies at once
Ultrasound, cryotherapy and radio frequency all offer a benefit. And, when combined together in a single treatment session, the results you can see from this trifecta far surpass those you can achieve using each technology on its own. “I think we’re going to see more of this—using all three together could be huge because you get fat removal and skin shrinkage,” says Dr. Higgins.
The shot that trims the tummy
The next new fat fighter comes in the form of injections to get rid of fat on the stomach. Currently named LIPO-202, this next-wave treatment, which is now in Phase 3 of its development, uses tiny injections that work on the beta receptors of fat cells to burn them (it doesn’t kill or remove them), in turn shrinking the cells, reducing unwanted fat and jump-starting the metabolic process. Keep in mind that weekly injections for eight weeks are necessary, but if that means a thinner midsection, we bet there will plenty of people willing to do it.
