Miley Cyrus wants you to know that there’s an unconventional skin-care ingredient responsible for her glow these days. According to People, the singer surprised a crowd of people with a performance at New York City’s Bemelmans Bar, and she took a brief moment to spill some of her beauty secrets. Her biggest one lately? The salmon sperm facial.
“I tried that salmon sperm,” she said. “Have you heard about that? I tried it.” The 32-year-old continued, joking about how she accidentally tasted the product. “Tastes strange, but my skin looks good,” she said. “I didn’t mean to drink it. It’s just like a whole mask.”
For the uninitiated, “salmon sperm” is just the colloquial name for PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotides, which are pieces of DNA derived from salmon (though it can sometimes come from other fish like trout). The facial itself was popularized in the last year by fellow celebrities Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian, the latter of whom once talked about her experience getting one on an episode of The Kardashians.
PDRN is available under brand names like Rejuran, Ameela, PhilArt and Nucelofill in Europe and Asia, and it’s often applied topically or via injections as an in-office treatment. When applied or injected, salmon sperm can help elasticity, hydration, texture and reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Salmon sperm facials aren’t exactly cheap, so if you’ve ever dreamed of having flawless, glowy skin like Cyrus, Aniston or Kardashian but you’re not in a position to shell out the cash, you can also buy over-the-counter salmon DNA skin-care products.
