Every time I see a photo of Lucy Hale, the first thing I notice is her flawless complexion. But in a recent interview, the actress revealed that her skin didn’t always look as radiant and clear as it does now. “The day I turned 21, my skin just went nuts,” Hale tells Byrdie, adding that she’s only recently found a routine that really works for her, as she’s battled hormonal issues and breakouts in the years since. Ahead, the products Hale can’t be without and the tips she’s come to swear by for positively blemish-free skin.

Double Cleanse
According to Hale, her top piece of advice to keeping skin radiant and breakout-free is making sure you never fall asleep with makeup on. “Double cleansing is what it’s really about for me,” she says. Her top pick for washing away the day: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil ($28). Next up is Restorsea’s Reviving Cleanser ($65), a water-based cleanser, which Hale uses with the Clarisonic Mia 2 Brush ($169) for a thorough, deep-down clean.

Exfoliate in Moderation
Twice a week, Hale says she exfoliates skin to ensure her complexion stays bright but not “overly exfoliated,” which can cause irritation and a red look. “I like Dr. Lancer’s products a lot,” she says. Lancer’s The Method: Polish ($75) does the job just right without overdoing it.

Serum Saviors
“A ton of serums” from both IS Clinical and SkinCeuticals—IS Clinical Active Serum ($130) is an editor favorite—follow the exfoliation to pack in the active ingredients.

Moisturizing Move
Last but not least is moisturizing—yes, even for acne-prone skin. “I’m a huge fan of SkinCeuticals,” Hale says. “I want everything. It’s so expensive, but it’s worth it. SkinCeuticals moisturizer and eye cream are great.” The brand’s Daily Moisture ($62) offering is designed for normal or oily skin and works to minimize pore size while still deeply hydrating skin. Win-win!

In-Office Must
Regular check-ins with Molly M. Lucio, Hale’s Los Angeles–based aesthetician, is just as important to her for happy skin as the list of products you just read. “I’ve been seeing her for over five years,” she says. “I’m really diligent about facials. If I can go once a week, I’ll do it.”
