From her public relationship with Kanye West to her striking red carpet looks and relatable social media content, Julia Fox has become somewhat of a household name in the eyes of pop culture lovers over the past year. Most recently, the celeb made waves after opening up about her feelings towards the media’s perception of aging and the personal struggles she’s faced as a result of the negativity surrounding the topic.
The star took to TikTok last week to share a candid recollection of how upset she was on her 27th birthday because of the toxic view she once had on aging. Fox reveals that her friends tried to surprise her at home with cupcakes and candles, and she recalls yelling at them saying, “I told you we’re not celebrating! There’s nothing to celebrate!” She goes on to explain, “I was, like, such a tyrant about it because I wanted the day to pass.” At the time, Fox remembers thinking that 27 was so old in the eyes of the media and that made her feel resentful and sad about her birthday and getting older as a whole.
But, losing a close friend of hers fundamentally changed how she feels about aging and growing up. Fox recalls telling her friend Harmony, who had flown in to celebrate 27 with her, “Don’t post. I don’t want to draw attention to the fact that I’m 27. I just want it to pass by like any other day,” a sentiment she regrets in hindsight, after Harmony’s sudden passing. “It’s sad because Harmony, the girl I was with, she died,” she begins. “She’s not even gonna have the privilege of getting older, you know. So we deny ourselves these milestones for what?”
Fox’s transformed opinions on life and aging also translate into her views on the beauty industry, which she also addressed in her candid TikTok series. The star explains how she feels like she wants to “sue” whenever she sees anti-aging products on the market, because she knows she is “going to age regardless” of what products she uses, and that’s okay! The mom-of-one emphasizes within her videos that her main issue is with the ideology that aging is something to be avoided which often seeps into the beauty industry among other places. “Getting old is f[*]cking hot, okay?” Fox exclaims. “It is sexy. It is probably the sexiest time in life, actually, because being pretty and hot in your 20s is the f[*]cking trenches, okay? And I’m not going back there.”
Fox has always been known to make a statement, whether it’s through her bold looks or her unapologetically authentic opinions, and the star’s view on aging is one that many of us could learn from in terms of accepting the beauty of every phase of life rather than holding on to or obsessing over our youth. After all, “aging is in.”
