The singer-songwriter, EGOT winner and entrepreneur is sending his creative spirit in a new direction: skin care. John Legend says he’d been thinking about his own line for years, but he didn’t want to create something new just because he’s “a celebrity with nice skin. There needed to be a real reason for it to exist.”

That reason, he explains, was the “need for more skin care made for melanin-rich skin, and the need for more study about dark skin tones in dermatology and product development.” Another critical factor: “It needed to be affordable and accessible— something people could buy at their local CVS. That’s how we created Loved01. I’m very entrepreneurial and creative at heart, and I have such a great creative team around me. I’ve collaborated with great skin-care brands before, and I care a lot about my skin.”

“We believe that Loved01 can be special because it’s formulated for an underserved market that deserves great skin-care products made with them in mind,” Legend continues. “We also want to create a larger movement for how the industry can change so that more research is done on melanin-rich skin and our unique issues and concerns. And we even need more dermatologists being trained in medical school on how to treat these needs. Even the FDA doesn’t require product testing on brown and black skin tones to label it effective and safe—it only requires it on lighter skin tones. We want to be a force for change.” Here, Legend opens up about his new brand, as well as the high-low mix of products he keeps in rotation.

“I love our Moisturizer ($10). It’s really creamy, and I like to use it in combination with the Face + Body Oil ($15), which you can use as a beard oil, too. We really focused a lot on moisture for this first launch—we’re going to add a lot more products and there are more issues we want to tackle, like hyperpigmentation and sun protection, etc—because it’s such a salient concern for so many black and brown people.

We’re known to lose moisture two and a half times faster than lighter skin tones, so it’s actually scientifically proven that we need products that focus on moisture more than other people do.

The process of creating Loved01 has really been an educational process for me and I feel like my skin is really improving because of it. Our gentle exfoliating cleanser is also amazing, and that’s Chrissy’s [wife Chrissy Teigen] favorite product of ours. It uses natural bamboo as the exfoliant and it feels really good—it doesn’t leave your skin really dry afterward.”

“I think the cool thing Chrissy and I like about the Bioré Strips ($12) is that you can just look at the results right away. They seem to work. I didn’t even know what a blackhead was until Chrissy taught me about it. She can actually look at my nose and do the extractions herself, but it kind of hurts because she doesn’t do all the steaming and everything that a facialist would do.

I get a facial like every month or two, and the main focus is extractions and things like that, but most of the care I do is at home, like most people.”

Tom Ford Black Orchid ($150) is my everyday finishing spray [laughs]. I’m not dressed until I put it on. I discovered it four or five years ago and I’ve been wearing it ever since—I really don’t like anything else as much. Once you figure out what you like, you go with it.”

“I’ve worked with SK-II ($100) in the past, and their products feel very luxurious. Chrissy taught me about this face mask and we both really like it. Having a partner who knows how to take care of her skin has been helpful for me because I’ve learned a lot from her over the years.”

5 / 6

“I like SheaMoisture’s Raw Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner ($11 each), and I usually wash my hair two times a week. I put a little moisturizing gel in it every day, which leaves it kind of nice and glossy. I’m pretty simple with my hair, aside from very frequent haircuts. My brother is my barber, and he does a light trim or a full cut on me at least once a week.”

“These Lancer Peel Pads ($75) are great. The ease of use is really good and I think guys like things that are straightforward and easy to use. I’m sure women do too, but guys maybe a little more.”
