It may have been a The White Lotus–fueled Sunday night, but over in Los Angeles, the annual Hollywood Beauty Awards (HBAs) were being held. Celebrating a decade of honoring the architects of beauty, the star-studded black-tie ceremony—which benefits the Helen Woodward Animal Center—recognizes iconic talent in hair, makeup, photography and styling for film, TV, music, the red carpet and editorial.
Academy Award–winning actress Regina King presented the first award, Outstanding Achievement in Makeup, to longtime friend Debi Young. Other stars who came out to support their trusted glam teams included Mariah Carey, who celebrated makeup nominee Kristofer Buckle; Colman Domingo, who celebrated longtime friend and Groomer of the Year winner, Jamie Richmond; and Sydney Sweeney, who accompanied Glen “Coco” Oropeza, The SS Hairstyling Award winner.
Buckle, perhaps, described the night the best: “It was so kind and generous to be included in several of the winners speeches❤A beautiful night with my favorite kind of people…ARTISTS❤”
The legendary Dyan Cannon—the first woman in Academy history to be nominated for Oscars both as an actress and as a filmmaker—received The Timeless Beauty Award, which was presented by Michael Nouri. Four-time Grammy winner Otis Williams of The Temptations received a standing ovation, accepting The Gentleman’s Award from the legendary Smokey Robinson. In 2018, Smokey received the very first Gentleman’s Award at the HBAs from Lionel Richie.
Golden Globe winner and Shōgun star Hiroyuki Sanada celebrated International Hairstyling Award honoree Mitsuyo Takasaki, who traveled from Japan to receive her award. Sanada and Takasaki have worked on several films together, and Takasaki helped bring the hairstyling designs of the FX series to life under the direction of Sanna Seppanen, who received Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling from actress Caitlin O’Connor.
Stephen Dorff presented Outstanding Achievement in SFX Makeup to Mike Marino, who was nominated for his third Oscar for Sebastian Stan’s transformation in A Different Man. Celebrated actor John Ortiz presented Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design to Janty Yates, who worked with Ortiz on American Gangster, as well as more than 18 films with Sir Ridley Scott. Brian Badie, who worked with Mike Marino on HBO’s The Penguin, was honored with Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling, presented by actor Jussie Smollett.
Recording artist and Latin Grammy nominee Becky G paid tribute to eighth grader Avery Colvert for founding Altadena Girls during the LA wildfires with The Beauty Impact Award. In a truly grassroots effort, Altadena Girls became a safe space for self-care and more for the teen girls impacted by the Eaton Canyon Fire.
In addition to artists, beauty brands and founders were also honored: Academy award nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo presented Fragrance of the Year to Clive Christian, while Academy Award–nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips (A Complete Unknown) presented Outstanding Achievement in Photography to longtime friend Davis Factor, cofounder of Smashbox Studios. IT Cosmetics founder Jamie Kern Lima presented Brand of the Year to industry pioneer Victoria Jackson for NO MAKEUP MAKEUP. Marjan Tabibzada (@YoungCouture) presented The International Beauty Award to Parfums de Marly for its Delina fragrance.
