One of the newer trends we’re seeing a lot of on social media is women logging their entire plastic surgery experience from start to finish to share with the world. Replete with bloody photos and gory details of the procedures that they’ve opted to have done, this is yet another way to give a firsthand account of the ins and outs of plastic surgery.

We spoke with @bunnydolldiary about her decision to journal and share her plastic surgery experiences. Here’s what she had to say.

“I decided to document my recovery and later add in the back story to fill in the blanks for my following. A resource like this would have been helpful for me and very few existed. Accounts would pop up and talk about the first five days after surgery then post again at a one month check up. I wanted to know more and see more.

I also wished to connect to likeminded individuals and create a safe place to discuss recovery, after care solutions, referrals and even “non-beauty” topics. Many of the original accounts are great friends now including my “Surgery Sister.” Surgery can be simple for some but in the end it’s invasive and life changing and sharing that journey and having a close relationship with someone going through something similar is always helpful.

My approach is that I do not ever push cosmetic surgery but rather address it as it is an option (and a popular one at that!) in this day and age. I push inner beauty and self love first. Due to my unique perspective and the environment I have created, my response has been positive. I look forward to being involved in the surgery and healing process on a bigger platform.”

According to Louisville, KY, plastic surgeon M. Bradley Calobrace, MD, social media is becoming a forum where younger generations seek out information. “Instagram, blogs, reviews, etc. are all extremely important for any plastic surgeon wanting to stay pertinent and reach this entire group of potential patients.” Part of the reason why we’re seeing so many women keep and digitally publish personal diaries of their plastic surgery procedures is simply because social media is the perfect place to do it and get the word out about the good, the bad and the ugly.

For plastic surgeons, a good experience that’s shared on social media goes a long way. Dr. Calobrace points out that, “Referrals from friends, family, physicians and previous clients are really valuable. A doctor telling you he or she is good is not nearly as reliable and powerful as others providing those critiques and referrals.” When considering surgery, it’s also helpful to get the ins and outs from someone who actually experienced the procedure themselves and documented it every step of the way.

But even if you read about one person’s experience, it’s important to know that there are still risks and complications that can arise from plastic surgery. Any type of surgery requires some recovery and downtime, which shouldn’t be taken lightly.
