Avocados

“In a study of 26 overweight adults, participants who ate half of an avocado at lunch reported increased satiation, less hunger, and less desire to overeat,” shares nutritionist to the stars (like Kelly Ripa!) Dr. Daryl Gioffre. “Avocados—and their oils—are one of the healthiest keto fats you can put into your body. When you eat more healthy fats, it curbs your cravings for sugar, suppresses hunger, and makes your body become more fat-adapted to burn fat easier.”

Broccoli

Amie Valpone, celebrity nutritionist and Lycored Ambassador, explains that broccoli is one of the most well-known detoxifying cruciferous veggies and is a powerhouse when it comes to helping the liver reduce toxicity. “Broccoli is known for detoxing excess estrogen from the body, which will contribute to weight gain and PMS,” she says. “Broccoli is full of phytochemicals to combat inflammation and it’s also high in fiber. Fiber is important for removing toxicity from our body because we need to have bowel movements every day to release toxins so it’s key to make sure you’re getting enough vegetables at each meal to keep things moving!”

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil isn’t just for hair masking. According to Dr. Gioffre, in a study with overweight men, 30 grams of coconut oil for four weeks reduced waist circumference by about 1.1 inches. “I recommend having a minimum of one tablespoon of coconut oil in the morning, as it is a medium-chain triglyceride that will satiate hunger and curb your cravings,” he explains. “As a result, you won’t feel the need to eat as much, and being a healthy fat, it will help your body burn more fat. Coconut oil will also increase your body’s metabolism, increasing the fat-burning efficiency of your body.”

Berries

“Berries such as blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are soaring with antioxidants and fiber,” explains Valpone. “Many women don’t realize that their weight gain is due to hormonal imbalances and not what they’re eating, which is why it’s so important to get your hormones tested. That said, adding in foods that are high in antioxidants is the name of the game when it comes to your weight and your hormones, which are so closely connected.”

Olive Oil + Lemon Juice

One tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and the juice of half of a lemon (on an empty stomach!) makes up what Dr. Gioffre calls a Belly-Fat Flusher Shot. “Mixing olive oil with lemon juice provides a large amount of nutrients and helps to detoxify the liver and gallbladder,” he explains. Because the liver is the body’s main detoxifying organ, it’s important to flush it, as the body holds onto fat when it is over-acidic and in a “toxic” state.

Even more, the healthy fat found in the olive oil tells the body to release cholecystokinin, which stimulates the gallbladder to release bile, a step Dr. Gioffre says helps to decrease our appetite and cravings for sugar by making us feel satiated for longer.

Green Juice

Green juice—no fruit, only vegetables and herbs—is loaded with vitamins and minerals, which detoxifies your body, helping to increase metabolism and lose weight,” contends Dr. Gioffre. “And because green juice is in the pre-digested state, it requires very little energy from your body, which helps with something called energy diversion. This means your body can use all this available energy to do other things, like boost metabolism and burn fat.” One to try: Alkamind Daily Greens Naked Greens ($40).
