There are just a handful of options in the nonsurgical neck department, like Botox Cosmetic for vertical bands and energy devices for tightening, but we may soon be getting another. The FDA has accepted Allergan Aesthetics’ application to expand SKINVIVE by Juvéderm for use in the neck, specifically to improve the appearance of horizontal neck lines. Here’s what to know about how it works to improve skin texture.
What it is
SKINVIVE is a hyaluronic acid-based skin booster. It’s already FDA-approved to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults over 21. Unlike traditional fillers, it’s not designed to add volume or reshape the face, instead, it delivers microdroplets of hydration under the skin’s surface to improve texture, radiance and overall skin quality.
Skin boosters like this are nothing new abroad, they’ve been popular in Europe and Asia for years, but they’re just starting to catch on in the U.S. market.
What it can do
According to Allergan’s clinical data, nearly 80 percent of patients who received SKINVIVE injections in the neck showed at least a one-grade improvement in horizontal lines after one month. Even more, about 88 percent, reported an improvement in overall neck appearance.
The most common side effects were mild and short-lived, including redness, swelling and tenderness at the injection site.
Montclair, NJ dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD, who participated in the clinical trial, says demand is already there. “Patients express frustration about the visible changes in their neck due to aging and sun exposure and seek nonsurgical treatment options to address them,” she says. “SKINVIVE may offer another tool for patients exploring their aesthetics treatment journey beyond the face.”
If cleared, SKINVIVE would be the first injectable skin booster officially approved for the neck, offering patients a nonvolumizing, nonsurgical option for treating one of the most stubborn signs of aging.
