When celebrity makeup artist Kelli Anne Sewell coined the term Gym Lips in 2022, it broke the internet. Now, she’s back with another makeup moment you’re about to see everywhere: shadow blushing.
What Is Shadow Blushing?
Shadow blushing is Sewell’s answer to the bold blush trend, but with a wearable, editorial twist. “I started this technique as a way to make blush look super natural on the skin, while playing around with bright, fun, trending colors,” she tells NewBeauty. The method involves layering two blush shades: one earthy, subdued tone as a base, and one vibrant pop of color concentrated on the apples of the cheeks.
The result? A seamless, soft-focus flush that blends effortlessly into the rest of the face—no harsh lines, no floating color blobs. “It’s inspired by artists like Mario [Dedivanovic] and Ariel [Tejada], whose work always looks flawless and cohesive.”

How to Do It
The technique is all about strategic layering. Start with the neutral blush—think terracotta, rosewood or muted mauve—and apply it generously across the cheeks, temples and even the eyelids. Sewell says this creates a “shadow” or backdrop for the brighter shade, which is then placed precisely on the highest point of the cheek. “The earthy tone will create a beautiful transition tone into the rest of the face.”
