When you’re the founder of a major beauty brand, the star of a hit TV show and a seasoned pop star like Selena Gomez, your skin is always under the microscope. Throughout her career, the 33-year-old has been refreshingly candid about her skin and largely unfazed by commentary—but recently, she hopped on social media to clear up a question about her upper lip.

In a post shared on Tuesday, December 16, the Only Murders in the Building actress responded to a question asking how she shaves her “mustache.” In typical Gomez fashion, she was open and honest, laughing as she explained that it wasn’t a mustache at all, but melasma that had appeared above her lip.

Melasma is a common condition caused by an overproduction of melanin, often triggered by sun exposure, and typically appears as brown or gray patches on the skin. While it frequently shows up on the upper lip, it can sometimes resemble a shadow-like discoloration, likely what Gomez’s follower noticed and mistook for hair.

True to form, her honesty didn’t stop there. “I actually have melasma and a pimple,” she said, even zooming in to show proof. For many women—including this writer—Gomez’s continued openness about her skin feels refreshing. Simply put, the Rare Beauty founder remains a reminder that even under constant scrutiny, keeping it real still resonates most.
