If there’s one award show to rule them all, it’s the Academy Awards. As Hollywood gears up for the 98th annual ceremony on Sunday, March 15, we’re revisiting some of the most unforgettable red-carpet moments from the event's past. The Oscars represent the pinnacle of film, celebrating the best work from across the industry—but if we’re being honest, it’s the fashion and glam that keep us watching. Year after year, stars arrive dripping in designer gowns, dazzling jewels and sculpted cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass. With that in mind, we combed through the archives to round up the Oscars style moments that defined the decades.
For a night centered around that little golden statue, the red carpet becomes a showcase for satin, organza and metallic bodices woven with silver thread. Each custom gown or vintage pull—paired with a perfectly chosen lip combo and hairstyle—represents dozens of man-hours from designers, stylists and glam squads. The result can be a fairytale aesthetic worthy of a princess, a classic Hollywood starlet or an alluring leading lady. From Grace Kelly to Viola Davis, Hollywood’s brightest stars bring their best to the Academy Awards, and we’re walking through the decades to revisit the fashion and beauty moments that still have us in a chokehold.

"The beautiful shine of Gabrielle’s gown inspired me to create skin that matched the sheen," Brown told Vogue of her inspiration. "The structure demanded that we keep the face softer, so I opted for clean skin with soft sculpting and added a peachy flush on cheeks and lips," Reiko Brown says. "I chose grey and taupe shades to softly smudge out the eyes and popped the lids with a lovely coral shade to add warmth. To complete the look, I added a dramatic lash for red carpet drama."
