Brunettes of the world-there’s good news if you’re dealing with dull, lifeless hair. Dark strands have the potential to shine more than other hair colors, so there are plenty of ways to replenish your strands and get them gleaming again in no time. Here’s how:
First, if you can’t get into the salon, Pierre Michel Salon expert colorist Angela Cosmai suggests switching to a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to add moisture and nourish your hair. But if you’re already privy to that tip, there’s a chance that your hair needs some deep cleaning. That’s why celebrity hair colorist Jennifer J. from the Juan Juan Salon in Beverly Hills says to use a clarifying shampoo to remove any product buildup that might be dulling your strands. Just know that it can strip your hair color and lighten it, so to add back moisture “make sure that you use a deep conditioning treatment afterwards. Then before blow drying it, use an oil such as Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil ($68) to feed your hair,” she says. Using oil also adds dimension to dark hair color and helps reflect light.
Now, if you’re keen on DIY projects, then using an at-home semi-permanent hair dye or gloss can also breathe new life into your hair. Just make sure you choose a product that is ammonia-free. “Ammonia tends to strip the hair cuticle to deposit its color, so after a few washings the hair loses its tone and becomes dry and lifeless,” says Cosmai.
Of course, you can always head to the salon and ask for a gloss treatment. Jennifer J. says, “It is usually a vegetable hair color with no ammonia and low volume developer, and will add richness and shine to your color with no drying.” Plus, the treatment only takes about 30 minutes to do and will last for a few weeks.
