How To Cover Up a Sunburn With Makeup

Sunburns happen. Here’s what you can do to cover up the redness.

No matter how much sunscreen we slather on and reapply, sunburns happen—and no matter how much makeup we put on our faces to cover up the redness, it seems as though it still overtakes us. We decided to get to the bottom of it by teaming up with three top makeup artists to finally find out how to effectively cover up a sunburn with makeup.

Jessica Scantlin, director of artistry at Blushington, suggests starting your makeup routine with a green concealer. “By using a green corrector (such as a concealer), this will help tone down redness,” she explains, “because the green hues will counteract the red now present in your skin.” We recommend Dermablend Concealer ($29).

Celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles explains the importance of the next step in your beauty regimen. “You need to cover the redness in your skin with foundation, but you also want to make sure your face isn’t lighter than your now extra-tan body,” she says, recommending that we mix moisturizer into our foundation to create a tinted moisturizer when we’re sunburned. “You want the coverage to be thin so you can reduce the redness without your skin looking mask-like.”

For blush, Scantlin recommends staying away from hot pink hues, as they will just accentuate the redness in your skin. Stiles agrees, recommending using a cream blush in a pale peach color. “This will reduce the redness while still bringing some color to your face,” she says. We love Stila Convertible Color ($25) in Lillium to give just the right amount of color.

When it comes to bronzer, both Scantlin and Stiles agree to apply it all over your face. Scantlin says to apply more bronzer than normal to camouflage the redness, and Stiles recommends applying a matte bronzer all over your face to bring warmth to your skin. Try Benefit Cosmetics’ Hoola Bronzer ($28) for a perfect bronze sans shimmer.

And for the finishing touches? “Choose more neutral colors for your lips, and play up your eyes,” says Scatlin, adding that false lashes and winged eyeliner are glamorous ways to draw attention to your eyes and not your red complexion.
