You can tailor your clothes to fit your body better and you can adjust your diet to help you lose weight, but what can you do when it comes to skin care? “Customization is the holy grail in the beauty industry, as it enables consumers to get what they truly want and need,” says Sabrina Tan, CEO and founder of Skin Inc, a company that offers customized skin-care products.
Why You Should Try It
Customized skin-care products allow for individuals to feel more in control of their overall beauty routines. “Your skin is unique and changes with your environment, lifestyle, stress levels, etc. So, trying to find what’s right for you in an off-the-shelf product can often come with a lot of trial and error,” says Tan. “Personalizing your skin care lets you get the results you want, with less fuss.”
Beauty products that are tailored to each individual put the focus on the lifestyle they lead to create a skin-care routine that targets their needs simply and effectively. “It’s a ‘one-size- fits-one’ approach, not ‘one size fits all.’ We build on the fundamental building block of healthy skin, which is effective and long-lasting hydration with high-quality humectants, and then combine that with a custom cocktail of beneficial actives selected for your skin’s needs,” says Tan.
New York dermatologist Hadley King, MD, agrees with the concept. “It makes sense to use products that target your specific concerns and are a good match for you,” she says. Personalized products can also help minimize irritations and sensitivities because the products work in tandem with your skin type. Plus, with some products, you can even customize the formulation (think serum, cream, oil, etc.) to match your personal preference.
The Cost Factor
“Because these products are designed to address your unique concerns, it saves you the work of experimenting with different products to find the best fit, and therefore a higher expense may be expected,” says Dr. King.
Tan considers customized skin care to be rather accessible. “It allows you to invest in a few well-selected, effective products rather than several ineffective products that could leave you with a skin-care graveyard.”
The Bottom Line
Dr. King says that the promise with customized skin care is that the products may make the process of finding a good product match for you a bit easier, which can definitely be worth the higher price tag. “And, there is a luxury, high-end feel to bespoke products made ‘just for you,’” she adds.
