Heartleaf, formally known as Houttuynia cordata, is a flowering plant native to Southeast Asia and resembles the shape of an elongated heart. “A well-known herb with a rich history of use in Chinese traditional medicine, it is beloved for its strong tendency to regrow,” explains Emily Philen, senior manager of scientific affairs at Murad.
Alicia Yoon, an aesthetician and CEO and founder of Peach & Lily, says the plant is used in both traditional Korean herbal remedies and skin-care formulas. “Heartleaf has a place in skin care due to its healing and hydrating powers,” adds cosmetic chemist Ginger King.
Its Benefits in Skin Care
Heartleaf is a gentle multitasker with many beneficial properties for the skin. “A few of the most popular are its abilities to soothe, hydrate and possibly reduce sebum,” says Victoria Fu, cosmetic chemist and cofounder of Chemist Confessions. This makes the ingredient a great match for anyone with sensitive, irritated or acne-prone skin. “In skin care, heartleaf extract can deliver calming, anti-inflammatory and antioxidative benefits to help fight signs of damage,” adds Yoon.
Who It’s Best for
“Heartleaf is a popular ingredient because it’s typically not irritating and great for all skin types,” says Yoon. “Everyone can benefit from using it, as the antioxidative properties can be helpful for daily preventative skin care.” Hye Kim, CEO and founder of OLIVIAUMMA, notes that it’s gaining traction among those with oily and combination skin. “It can be particularly helpful if you experience acne or sudden redness.”
Philen says heartleaf products can also be great for people with eczema. “And, it may also be helpful to use with potent actives if you are concerned about adverse reactions.”
