Whether your signature style involves sleek, straight strands or undone beachy waves, it’s a well-known fact that hair looks better when it’s voluminous, not flat and limp. Now, experts agree the introduction of hair powders—weightless powder that is dusted onto the scalp for serious height and texture—is taking the space by storm and is a surefire way to amp up volume without ever weighing down your tresses.

“Winter hair has no volume, so hair powders do a great job of giving extra lift on the root,” says celebrity hairstylist Felix Fischer, who works with Jennifer Lopez and Kate Winslet. Similar to your favorite dry shampoo, celebrity hairstylist Kendall Dorsey says hair powders, when applied correctly, help to extend your blowout and absorb the natural oils on your roots. “It helps the hair to not fall flat for a few days and preserves the lift. It re-energizes and livens texture on second- and third-day hair.”

According to Dorsey, application is easy. “Dust powder at the roots until the entire head is covered. Start at the nape of the neck and work up to the forehead in horizontal sections,” he says, adding that three fingers spaces apart works well. But, Fischer says to be careful not apply too much. “Your hair can get greasy-looking from using too much on the roots.”

Just like you purchase shampoo and conditioner based on your hair type, different hair powders are better than others depending on the result you’re after for your specific strands. If your blowout doesn’t last longer than a day, R+Co Skyline Dry Shampoo Powder ($36) works well for busting oil and delivering volume in every pump. David Mallett’s Volume Powder ($40) is packed with bamboo to reinforce brittle hair and gets bonus points for for ease of use. Oribe’s Swept Up Volume Powder Spray ($42) delivers intense volume to limp hair (it will feel like you teased it for an hour), making it a good choice for limp hair; Eva NYC Zero Gravity Volume Powder ($12) delivers gritty texture (plus a dose of vitamin B5 and aloe vera) that’s ideal for those looking for lived-in styles, and Not Your Mother’s Girl Powder Volumizing Hair Powder ($7) is so lightweight, the packaging reminds you the bottle isn’t empty, even though it feels like it.

There are plenty of options available for turning up the volume, and starting at $6, there’s no reason you can’t give your strands a lift.
