Call it a case of the new year blues, but this time of year my skin always seems like it’s in a rut. Perhaps it’s from indulging in one too many sweet treats or a lack of sleep from the never-ending holiday parties. Or, it’s from the cold weather here in the Northeast, which means that most of my time is spent indoors. (Hello, blue light exposure.)

Whatever the cause, I was looking for a product that could help me get a little bit of glow back into my sallow skin. And boy did I find it in the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel.

What Makes This Peel Different

Though it’s called a peel, it’s actually a creamy, rinse-off mask. The formula boasts a combination of natural fruit enzymes to gently dissolve dead skin, clean out pores and leave skin feeling refreshed. But, the best part is that it does it all without using harsh, abrasive ingredients.

Key Ingredients

The two stars of the show are naturally derived enzymes from papaya (papain) and pineapple (bromelain). Both of these ingredients have gained popularity in skin-care products due to their exfoliating and skin-brightening qualities. The other key ingredient is derived from brown seaweed, which is known for its powerful moisture-boosting benefits.

How to Use It

The peel is meant to be used up to twice a week on clean skin. Apply it to your full face using circular motions and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Then remove it with a warm washcloth. Follow with your normal skin-care routine.

How the Mask Worked on My Skin

Even though I was feeling desperate for a way to boost my tired-looking skin, I’m always careful when it comes to using a new exfoliant. My combination skin tends to be a bit drier in the winter, so sensitivity is more of an issue. Other times of year, I can handle most products without irritation.

I decided to give this a try one evening right out of the shower, knowing that my pores were open and would be most receptive to the mask. First, I always suggest a patch test for people with sensitive skin. I applied the cream near my jawline and waited a few minutes. Because I didn’t experience any redness or tingling, I applied it to my full face. The fresh papaya scent is a nice treat, too. Fifteen minutes later, I removed the mask and was surprised by how much softer my skin felt. It was a big difference after only one use! But what really convinced me to add this into my new year routine was how much smoother my makeup went on the next morning.
