Sure, double glossing is not that nuanced—it’s pretty much what it sounds like, but there are a few things we wanted to ask experts about the trend that seemingly took over TikTok overnight.

  • Judi Gabbay is a celebrity makeup artist in New York
  • Natalie Dresher is a professional makeup artist in Miami
  • The Fenty Beauty team

What is double glossing?

“The premise of double glossing is to use a lip oil and then to add a lip gloss over the top to create an extra plump, extra juicy look,” explains celebrity makeup artist Judi Gabbay. She recalls Rihanna and Fenty Beauty kicking off the trend, and Fenty is happy to take credit for the viral hack.

“The double gloss method was coined by Fenty Beauty and Skin as a way to create the perfectly hydrated, glossy pout. The trend is all about layering products to maximize your skin-care and makeup routine to achieve that sought-after plumped and moisturized lip look,” the Fenty team tells us.

How do I double gloss?

According to Fenty, the OG double gloss method begins with a lip oil or lip mask for cushioning hydration, then to complete the look you would layer on gloss. They recommend Fenty Treatz Hydrating + Strengthening Lip Oil ($24) or Plush Puddin’ Intensive Recovery Lip Mask ($23) followed by one of the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb varieties like the Lip Luminizer ($21) or Cream Color Drip Lip Cream ($22). “The benefits are ultra-moisturized, high-gloss lips that are hydrated from the inside out.”

Professional makeup artist Natalie Dresher says double glossing can also help make lips appear more plump—read: more youthful—without having to overline or add a plumping product. She likes the combo of colored gloss, like Tower28 Pistachio ($16), paired with MAC Clear Lipglass ($23) on top of it. “The colored gloss will give a milky pigmented color payoff, and the MAC Clear Lipgloss is actually formulated to not sink into any fine lines in the lips,” she explains. “I almost always utilize this technique with my clients!” Gabbay notes that applying too much product can end up feeling or looking gloopy, so if you do try the trend, keep that in mind.

Do I need to double gloss?

Like 99 percent of the beauty trends in the 21st century, you don’t need to be double glossing. “Is it pretty? Of course. It will definitely be glossy because you’re putting two glosses on,” says Gabbay. “Is it necessary? Absolutely not.” But if it makes you feel happy and confident—go for it!

Gabbay does love doubling up on other lip products. “Generally speaking, a lip oil is a great way to make the lip look like it has life again, especially if you’re going to do a matte lip—sometimes when we do a matte lip, it can look a bit gray almost,” says Gabbay. So doing a combination of a matte lipstick with lip oil feels practical as they have different functionalities. The result is a “more plump, more luscious vibe.”
