Secrets for Smooth Hair

Are you plagued by frizzy, dry or damaged hair? If so, you’re not alone. From humidity to age-related textural changes and even damage caused by chemical treatments and heated tools, the reasons why our hair “misbehaves” are endless. Whatever the cause of your hair dilemma, the right treatments and products can take your locks from out of control to smooth and soft.

Hair Recovery
If overprocessed strands are getting in the way of the look you’re after, it may be time to turn to a professional treatment. Deep conditioning or an intensive in-salon replenishing treatment may be just what your hair needs. Targeting damaged to severely damaged hair, L’Oréal Professionnel Séries Expert Fiberceutic literally fills in the “holes” by molding to the inner cortex, adding support. “Under a microscope, damaged hair looks like a road with potholes. But Fiberceutic fills and smooths the strand,” says celebrity hairstylist Eva Scrivo. The two-step treatment leaves hair smooth for six to 10 shampoos.

Damage Prevention
Avoid excessive use of styling tools and be sure to apply a thermal protectant before styling. We like Joico Smooth Cure Thermal Styling Protectant ($18)—it protects against the damaging effects of the hair iron but also keeps hair smooth and straight in even the most humid of climates.

Smoothing Treatments
Consider a healthy, formaldehyde-free smoothing treatment, at-home or in-salon, to get smooth, shiny locks. For the past few years, keratin-based straightening treatments have been the method of choice for taming unruly, frizzy and even curly hair. But recent awareness concerning potential toxicity related to the key smoothing ingredient, formaldehyde, has prompted a wave of new, innocuous options. Bumble and bumble offers a Concen-straight Pro Treatment, a customizable way to straighten without harsh chemicals. According to Sabrina Michals, Bumble and bumble hairstylist, it’s the mélange of pearl, tourmaline, malachite, sapphire powder and amino acids that together, loosen the bonds that give hair its natural curve, realigning it into a straight configuration—a feather-light silicone blend sets the shape for lasting smoothness and heat protection. “The treatment gives you the option to wear your hair pin-straight or in a frizz-free wave,” she says.

i'd highly recommend Magic Sleek- i've been using it for 2 years and there's no other product out there like it. it's formaldehyde free and contains no harsh chemicals- i'm pretty sure they're certified. i've even had it done while pregnant (of course after my doctor approved a list of ingredients) my hair was so damaged from keratin, dry and lifeless- Magic Sleek has repaired so much damage and made my hair look alive again and it grows SO MUCH now (apparently cause it has a high vitamin E content idk) i know it's made with a lot of good and natural ingredients from the Amazon. what i like best about it is that i can color and wash my hair the same day and there are no fumes like other products- no burning in my nose and eyes and it doesn't even irritate my skin. my hair would probably be falling out of my head if it weren't for magic sleek- definitely check it out.

Pro naturals is awesome for smoothing hair. Coconut oil helps but it's too heavy for my hair.
