Packing for a vacation is always exciting. But for beauty obsessives, like myself, it means streamlining routines and bringing along select products fit for the occasion. Tried and true items are usually a no-brainer, but a vacation can also be a good time to test new formulas under more appropriate conditions. Recently, I traveled to Belize for my very first solo trip, and it was the perfect setting for an assortment of SPF products. Before you judge me, let me explain. Belize uniquely borders the Caribbean and mountain ranges in Guatemala. Spending time in the different locations meant I needed to be prepared for the humidity from the rainforest and the extreme heat from the islands.
Given that, it only made sense that I dedicate a portion of my product storage to sun protection. Finding formulas for melanated skin can be tricky, as many often leave awkward-looking white casts or fail to absorb at all. But there are lots of brands on the market getting it right. Innovations in the category are finally delivering products that work, regardless of complexion, and provide powerful protection against both UVA and UVB rays. From body sprays to face sunscreens, makeup and lip care, I planned to cover all the bases for my trip. I was sure to pack my favorites, including a $14 glowy primer, and some new formulas that will be sticking around for summer.

This clear SPF is formulated to feel like a water-gel cream while providing maximum sun protection. It’s packed with hydrating ingredients and melted into my skin like a lightweight serum, which was ideal with the high heat and humidity. Best of all, it left no white cast and didn’t cause any pilling under my makeup.

Cay Skin’s Isle Lip Balm is beloved by editors for its non-sticky formula and juicy shade range. I have a few different colors, but this pinky nude enhances the color of my lips and has incredible glossy shine. The brown-sugar flavor is also a nice touch.

This was the first Colorescience product I’d ever tried, and it’s still one of my favorites. It gives you a subtle bronzy glow and UVA/UVB protection with just a light dusting. I use it in tandem with a face sunscreen, applying it around the temples and cheeks for added warmth, but it also works well on the chest and décolletage area.

The creamy consistency and texture make this feel more like a rich body cream than an SPF. The proprietary peptide protects against sun exposure and helps prevent collagen loss and the aging issues that come with it. Even more impressive is that it absorbed evenly without extra rubbing, leaving no streaks or greasy residue.

I like to use sunscreen sprays to touch up protection throughout the day. This one mists the skin with a lightweight formula and doesn’t feel sticky or greasy afterward.

I swear by SPFs that double as primers, and while there are many great formulas out there, you can’t beat the price of e.l.f’s Whoa Glow. The shades have just enough shimmer to enhance natural radiance while smoothing and protecting. Plus, it has hydrating ingredients and a slightly grippy texture that helps prime my skin for makeup.
