Forehead size tends to be a touchy subject. Whether your forehead is actually on the larger side or you just think it is, it’s something plenty of people are self-conscious about. Luckily, there are contouring techniques and hairstyles that can help you get closer to the look you want. We support rocking out with your natural forehead out, but if you want to try a haircut that helps reduce the surface area appearance—these are the four that experts recommend.

Curtain bangs

“Whether the hair is short or long, one of my favorite hacks for clients trying to minimize the look of a larger forehead is angled curtain bangs,” says Tina Malhotra. “Not only are curtain bangs a huge trend, but this is a great way to close in on the corners of a larger forehead area while allowing the client flexibility to wear the bangs more as a frontal fringe or pushed off to the side. Not to mention, they look so stylish on lazy hair days.”

Malhotra likes to style curtain bangs by blowing them forward and curling them under with a small round brush. Once they cool, use your fingers to push them back so they fall with a swoop. This will truly camouflage your forehead with a ‘curtain,’ she says.

Bottleneck bangs

Benson notes that bottleneck bangs are a good option for those trying to reduce the appearance of their forehead. Think of bottleneck bangs as curtain bangs’ cooler older sister. The look is named for the part in the bangs mimicking the silhouette of a wine bottle.

Layers

If you have a larger forehead, Benson recommends considering a layered haircut. Layers will add dimension and movement that will draw attention away from the forehead and help the face look less long. Plus, layers pair beautifully with bangs.

Piecey bangs

Whether you call them wispy, piecey or eyelash bangs, this look has been having a moment, and Benson says it’s a good go-to for those with larger foreheads. Pair it with an updo for some forehead coverage, or frame your face beautifully with all your tresses down. Piecey bangs offer just enough coverage without requiring full commitment.
