We’ve been there: too tired (or let’s face it, lazy) to go through the entire face-washing song and dance at the end of the night, so we resort to a face wipe, instead. And while reaching for a cleansing cloth is a much more responsible choice than letting your face hit the pillow with a full-face of makeup on, you should know that wipes only remove so much in one sweep (be sure to follow up with a second). So when Avène’s new 3-in1 Make-Up Remover ($20) hit my desk filled with promises of softer, makeup-free skin without having to turn on your faucet, I couldn’t be more excited to take it for a test drive.

The instant the cool, milky lotion hybrid hit my fingertips, I know my skin was about to be in for a comforting, soothing treat (perfect after a long day). Using the cleanser is easy: apply the fluid directly onto dry skin—it’s safe for use on the eyes, face and lips—and massage it in with your fingers until the lotion turns into a fluid and makeup and grime is fully dissolved (it takes seconds). When you’d usually rinse off with water, reach for a dry washcloth instead—I like to use a textured one to add some exfoliation into the mix (you can also use cotton balls).
Moving in a circular motion to ensure you’re not missing any makeup, your plain-Jane cloth acts like the water would, removing all of the makeup and oil that’s already dissolved and ready to be swept off of the surface. Plus, if your skin usually feels dry, stripped or irritated after your wash with your traditional cleanser, this one will pleasantly surprise you. It leaves skin feeling (and looking!) soft and plump—Avène’s cult-classic Thermal Spring Water is to thank here—and a light, petal-fresh scent will have you feeling like you’re at a spa. After two weeks of using it, there’s officially nothing I’d change about this formula—and my skin agrees—other than it being available in a family size so I’d never run out of it.
