The skin-care aisle can sometimes feel like a chemistry class with its complex ingredient lists, but NewBeauty readers know exactly what they’re looking for. In a recent survey of more than 1,300 readers,* clear favorites emerged among the scientific-sounding names, with hydration and anti-aging ingredients leading the pack.

Top Skin-Care Ingredients

Hyaluronic acid takes the lead, with 77.1 percent of readers actively seeking this hydrating powerhouse in their products. Following closely, vitamin C is a priority for 68.9 percent of readers, while retinol—often considered the gold standard for anti-aging—is sought after by 66.1 percent of respondents.

Peptides and collagen, both known for their skin-strengthening properties, are priorities for 65 percent and 60.8 percent of respondents, respectively. The skin barrier also gets significant attention, with 57.9 percent of surveyed readers looking for ceramides in their products, while 56.9 percent seek out niacinamide.

Sun protection remains a consistent priority, with 52.6 percent of respondents specifically looking for SPF in their skin-care products. For those focused on specific skin concerns, 39.9 percent seek out salicylic acid, while 36.5 percent look for squalane in their products.

The Bottom Line

The data shows that hydration, anti-aging, and skin barrier support rank highest among ingredient priorities, with readers gravitating toward well-researched ingredients that deliver multiple benefits.
