We try different invasive and noninvasive cosmetic treatments, creams, serums and various devices on our quest to look younger. And while all of that works wonders, there’s something even simpler that you can do to shave off a couple of years—bangs. We know it seems too easy to be true. That’s why we asked our experts for their professional opinion.

“Having a soft layered bang or a longer length bang like Kate Middleton softens facial features,” says celebrity hairstylist David Babaii. “As a woman ages, it is important to create soft looks especially around the face. Staying away from severe blunt cuts is key to having a more fun playful look.”

Mika Fowler, celebrity hairstylist at Gavert Atelier Salon in Beverly Hills, CA, says that some of her clients get bangs just to hide their wrinkles. “Bangs make you look younger by making your face look rounder and by hiding your forehead.”

That said, bangs won’t always make you look younger. It’s all about choosing the right style of bangs for your face shape. Heart shaped faces work best with side-swept bangs. Long or oval shaped faces can really choose any style. Round shaped faces should go for a longer, side-swept style. And finally, square shaped faces should go for side-swept or thinner bangs with side fringe to give a softer look. Find the perfect bangs for your face shape.

But don’t worry if you’re afraid to take the plunge. “Before you cut any bangs, try some of the fake bangs first,” says Babaii. “Many wig stores allow you to try various looks on, so take advantage of it. This will allow you to find the look that is best for you.”
