Joan Rivers, the queen of fashion trash talk with her notable New York accent and keen celebrity quips, doesn’t keep quiet about much. When it comes to plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures (a topic most celebrities vehemently deny when speculated upon by media tabloids), Rivers is the first to pipe up. In fact, the 78-year-old not only declares her love for plastic surgery, she goes as far as to disclose just how many cosmetic procedures she has had.
How many are we talking? Rivers was recently quoted saying she has had over 700 cosmetic enhancements-739 to be exact. What that number includes exactly-Botox, injectables, lifts, tucks, so on and so forth-has yet to be mentioned, but the number sounds exaggerated no matter how frozen River’s features look.
Beverly Hills, CA, plastic surgeon Leslie H. Stevens, MD (who hasn’t treated the star) agrees. “[That many procedures] certainly sounds excessive. I don’t know if I really believe it. Think about it, even if you had 10 operations a year, you couldn’t touch that number. A reasonable person, gets filler less than twice a year, and gets Botox three to four times a year,” says Stevens. The math just doesn’t add up.
Seven hundred procedures or not, Rivers has, no doubt, taken plastic surgery to an excessive level. Plastic surgery addiction is something serious and doctors should be aware of it. “If there is something you could actually do to help someone [from getting too many procedures], then a doctor should speak up. People get caught in a cycle. For example, with lips, people get injections and then they think that looks good. Three months later, they are used to the new volume, or have lost some of it that has been added, and want the lips even bigger. It’s a viscous cycle-raising your expectations of what you think is ‘normal’,” says Stevens.
What do you think, is Joan fibbing about the number of cosmetic procedures she’s done?
