When I picture the perfect ponytail, a very specific image (likely from one of my Pinterest boards circa 2016) comes to mind: sitting perfectly in the middle of the head, just enough wispiness in the front to look undone while still holding shape and of course, a pony full of length and body. Have I ever achieved this idealistic ponytail myself? Of course not! And I know I’m not alone.
Enter TikTok’s latest hair “hack”: the drop ponytail. While the name itself doesn’t make it abundantly clear what the drop ponytail is, just one video tutorial will convince you to try the method yourself. If you’re still hoping to master the perfect Pinterest ponytail one day like me, you’ll want to check out TikTok’s drop ponytail technique.
How to Do a ‘Drop Ponytail,’ According to TikTok
I’ll give it to the TikTok beauty girlies—the drop ponytail hack is one of the most low-maintenance hairstyles I’ve seen on the app. The results are amazing every time. To create the drop ponytail look, start by pulling your hair into a ponytail at the very top of your head—much higher than feels comfortable—and securing it with a hair tie. Then, shake the ponytail until it loosens and drops (hence the name) to your typical ponytail height. Once you’re happy with the height, re-tighten the ponytail by splitting the ends and pulling. Next, watch as the messy style turns into an effortlessly cool-girl pony. Pull a few strands out around your face, and you’re all set.
I will say, if you have shorter or finer hair, this hack will take a little practice and manipulation. I have a collarbone-length shag cut, and when I tried the drop ponytail method, my results were less than perfect on account of my short layers and lack of fullness to begin with. But, with a little effort, you can make the drop ponytail look work on any length.
