5 Steps To A Better Blowout

Get salon results at home

It seems so simple: Lather, rinse, blow-dry. But anyone who’s ever walked out of a salon with a great blowout knows that achieving the same results at home isn’t easy. We sought NYC-based stylist Jasmine Anna Galazka of Warren Tricomi Salon to find out how to get professional-quality results at home.

5 Steps To A Better Blowout

Condition Training

Galazka says a great blowout starts with a great wash. "My favorite products are the Kerastase Chronologiste Bain Shampoo ($42) and Mask ($149). You'll get super hydration and moisture replenishment," she says.

Use Protection

Drying your hair straight out of the shower can damage your locks. Instead, towel-dry and apply a heat-protectant product to prevent breakage and overexposure. Then, add a volumizer, Galazka suggests. This helps add fullness without leaving your hair feeling too sticky or firm.

The Great Divide

Separate your hair into six sections. Galazka recommends making a plus sign on top of your head and dividing the hair into four sections. Then, divide the hair at the nape of the neck into two additional sections.

Brush Hour

Using a medium-size round brush (Galazka is a fan of the Y.S. Park medium 60G1, $132), start at the nape and work your way up toward the crown. "The key is to make sure each section is completely dry before starting a new one," she says. After each section, wrap the piece around two fingers and secure it into a pin curl with a duckbill clip. Next, move to the side sections, beginning at the bottom and working your way up to the crown again.

Spray and Go

Once the full head is completed, Galazka says to spray with a firm, long-lasting hairspray like Keratase Laque Dentelle ($37) to set everything in place. If you want more curl, leave the clips in longer. For a sleeker hairdo, remove them right away. Release the clips and run through the curls with a comb or your fingers. You can touch-up any pieces around your face or bangs for extra smoothness. The finishing touch: Spray with long-lasting hairspray to keep your blowout on point all day long.
