Just because it’s trending on social media, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily solid—at least not in the eyes of these celebrity makeup artists. Here are 10 things they wish would go away.

The Over-Contoured Face

This is one YouTube trend Joanna Schlip, celebrity makeup artist for Physicians Formula, shuns. “Women watch these videos and try to copy, but they don’t take their own faces into consideration. There are the basics such as the cheekbones and jawline, but the rest should be customized to each face.” Adds celebrity makeup artist Natasha Severino, “Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a sculpted face, but heavy shading and contouring is aging and it can look ridiculous if it’s not executed correctly. Try molding your face with light-absorbing and light-reflecting products instead.”

Ombré Lips

While this is fun for social media, Sonia Kashuk, makeup artist and founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty, says it’s totally impractical for everyday wear. “Once you start living—and start talking/drinking/eating—the beautiful shading can turn into a mess. Why not pick a great lip color that’s fun and flattering throughout the day?”

Gray Lips

This is another lip-color trend Kashuk isn’t in love with. “This one speaks for itself—save lip colors like this for Halloween.”

The Step-by-Numbers Application

One that’s in line with the whole less-is-more mantra: Every day you don’t need EVERY product. “Look at your skin and take into consideration where you are going, what you are doing and what the lighting will be like,” Schlip says. “For example, consider what the makeup you are putting on will look like at work, in harsh daylight, bright light or at night on a date.”

“Instagram” Brows

Warning: We may have gone to the crazy place with the thick brow trend. “Brows are meant to frame the eyes and pull a makeup look together, not dominate or take over to the point that all people see are your eyebrows when they look at you,” Kashuk says. “You can have strong, bold brows, but they should look like you are genetically blessed, not traced out of a book.” Kathy Genchi, makeup artist at Julien Farel in New York, agrees. “As a makeup artist, I see many trends that I don’t like, but one is extra-dark eyebrows. Like a lot of these trends, they start on runway and don’t translate in everyday life. I like a well-balanced makeup look; one that is polished and pretty. With a too-strong brow, your eye goes right there to the brow and nowhere else. I want people to notice the woman, not just a dark, trendy brow!”

Too Much Highlighter

“I love a good glow, but layering on a highlighter, especially one that flashes too silver/metallic, looks artificial and unnatural,” Kashuk says. Celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff is also turned off by the “too-much” trend. “My least favorite beauty trend is anything that requires thick layers of makeup applied for the theatrics of Instagram or YouTube. Tribal stripes for contour, disco ball–level strobing, clown-like color correcting. It is disappointing that this type of makeup has gotten so much attention and recognition; there are so many gorgeous products out there being misused for these types of trends.”

7 / 10

Too-Big False Lashes

“A little drama is fantastic, but the trend of wearing very long lashes meant for the stage actually works against looking pretty,” Kashuk says. “Balance is key to a great makeup application, and that includes your lashes.”

8 / 10

Sleeping in Makeup

This is one of those skin care never-dos, but Kashuk says it’s actually also an emerging craze. “There has been a recent trend of women sleeping in their makeup so they always look ‘perfect.’ Going to bed with your face on is the biggest beauty sin. Your skin needs to breathe, if it’s blocked by layers of makeup you can do real damage! And much like the carefulness and time spent applying makeup, it’s so important to give just as much care to removal and cleansing.”

9 / 10

Worn-Off Lips

Lip trends are getting a bad name on this list, but Severino says if you choose to wear a statement lip, wear it well! “Be conscious that it may wear off or bleed throughout the day and always have you color on hand to touch it up.”

Anything That Doesn’t Suit You

The problem with most of these trends is that they can get a little lost in translation. “I hate any trend that isn’t done properly or doesn’t suit you,” says Rose-Marie Swift, RMS Beauty founder and celebrity makeup artist. “Trends work great on young, photogenic models, but unfortunately that doesn’t always extend to all of us out there. Know when to calm down trends to better suit your style, face and features.”
