It happens daily: Women wonder if a product will actually work, if it’s worth the splurge and how they’ll look if they take a plunge with a new treatment, tube or product. Now, the makers of ModiFace, the augmented reality company behind the technology that lets you “try on” lipstick or eye shadow, have announced a tool called Skin AI that stimulates your skin transformations in a live video. In lay terms, this new technology will show you (in real time) what a product can do for your complexion, wrinkles and overall appearance.

Dr. Parham Aarab, founder and executive chief officer of ModiFace, says that Skin AI is the first scientifically validated technology created to detect and simulate very specific elements of the skin. “This will be a game-changing technology for the skin care industry, both for assessing the state of your skin and for visualizing the impact of potential skin care products,” he adds.
Created in conjunction with a panel of dermatologists, Skin AI was created to detect skin concerns like dark spots, acne, rosacea, discoloration, dryness, uneven skin texture and fine lines and is able both measure and assess each issue in real time. Once your concerns are measured, the tool can be used to stimulate changes to the skin via live video, providing before-and-after skin comparisons.
“We created skin AI to serve as the ultimate skin understanding, monitoring and visualization engine,” says Jingyi Zhang, executive director of engineering at ModiFace. “Skin AI is to be used by brands to really measure the true impact of a product before it’s actually launched, but also in stores to simulate skin care effects on a potential customer before they make a purchase.”
Skin AI will be available to skin care brands as either a mobile app capable of providing in-app skin assessments and clinically accurate product visualizations on live video, or as a web-API capable of providing web-based skin assessments and product visualizations on user photos. According to the company, multiple skin care brands are in the final stages of launching applications powered by ModiFace’s Skin AI technology.
Just like virtually trying on a lipstick shade that looks good on you will better convince you to buy it because you know what it looks like, the technology is expected to encourage users to stick to their skin care regimens more strictly because they can see the results immediately without the months of commitment it would normally take.
