Whatever role Debi Mazar takes on, she’s always a force. From her early days as a backup dancer for Madonna (she was also her makeup artist!) and an unforgettable role in Goodfellas, to playing Shauna on HBO’s Entourage, her presence is known. Now, the 52-year-old counts playing Maggie on Younger—Season 4 premieres tonight on TV Land—as her current gig, with the release of a cookbook and a Woody Allen film on the horizon. We recently caught up with the actress, whose bathroom would give even the most overstocked of Sephoras a run for their money.

On her favorite beauty products: “I really love Edward Bess products. He, himself, is a lovely, divine creature. I love his Precious Pearl Perfector—it almost looks like a ball you play pool with—and when you apply it, it gives you an ‘insta-glow,’ a little bit of a healthy, dewy look that doesn’t look like disco makeup. On top of that, I put his Ultra Dewy Complexion Perfector. It has very nice coverage, but you can still see skin through it. I prefer that look to a heavier foundation.”

On the makeup she orders in bulk: “I love Surratt liquid eyeliner. I call Troy Surratt personally and order SIX at a time because both of my daughters steal mine. It’s also their favorite. I’ve tried every eyeliner there is and this one glides on smoothly. For the top of my liner, I add a little bit of Givenchy liquid liner. It can be messy, but I put it on top of the Surratt to give it a bit of a black-patent, glassy look—it’s awesome. And my favorite mascara is Lancôme Définicils; everyone has a go-to mascara and that one is mine.”

On the product she’s used since the ’70s: “The one consistent thing I always have in my home is Dr. Hauschka moisturizer. My mom used it; I used it on my babies. I also like the brand’s toner. It’s a constant in my cabinet. I also always have the Natura Bissé Diamond Extreme line on hand. My skin tends to be a little on the drier side and the line moisturizes up a storm. I also always have good old Cetaphil in my house. If you don’t use something with a little bit of detergent, your makeup doesn’t come off.”

On her mask obsession: “I do masks at least twice a week. I love the Biologique Recherche masks, but they can be hard to get. I also like Caudalie, Tata Harper and Dr. Jart. Dr. Jart has a Neck & Chin Lift mask that, when I put it on, I feel like Joan Crawford—in a good way. It has this campy packaging; you slap it on, you wait and when you take it off, you feel like you just gave yourself plastic surgery. It’s probably mental, but I think it works and I love the whole concept.”

On the importance of keeping skin active: “I like a facial but I find it to be kind of gratuitous. I can stick my face over a steaming pot of water and squeeze the crap out of my pores at home. I do like the massage and the mists and all that. It’s embarrassing, but I probably get a facial once a year. But I always keep my skin ‘active’ with my products. I’m constantly waking my skin up and getting all that makeup and city dirt out. I have to say, compared to women who are sometimes younger than me, I think my skin looks good, and I’ve smoked, drank and eaten whatever I wanted in my life. Maybe there’s something to what I’m doing. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.”

On her behind-the-scene makeup moves: “On set, my makeup artist swipes the sponge across my face and then I take over. I do my face faster and probably better than anyone else, so I just do it myself. And I’m always available to help and teach anyone how to look better and feel better about themselves. In terms of beauty, helping someone feel the best they can be is great. It’s good to boost confidence in people.”

On the beauty trends she wishes her teenage daughters would ditch: “My daughters have seen some Kardashian shows and I recently went into my one daughter’s room and it looked like she had used a card and swiped shadow across her cheek, then used highlighter. I had to kind of school them. I think less is more. There’s a lot of abundance out there right now when it comes to makeup. I love that women are wearing eyelashes again; I love that women are wearing eyeliner again. I love that look. Highlighter is a bit much and I’m sort of offended by that overdrawn lip. I don’t understand why people think bigger is better there. Thinner lips are beautiful. Open up history books! We need to remember what true, iconic beauty back in the day looked like. That’s what I try to show my kids. I have an incredible library of books and I try to turn my children on to that and I hope they share it with their friends.”

On “Chanel-bag” face: “I love to go to the dermatologist for lasers and laser hair removal. I’ve tried different things, but I am wary of the intense stuff because I have sensitive skin. I don’t want to burn off my face; I’m not there yet. I do like lasers for brown spots, the occasional broken blood vessel and I like the fact that some help produce collagen. They’re really good. One time I got a laser treatment and it looked someone pressed a Chanel bag into my face and stepped on it for an hour. I looked like that for a good 24–36 hours; I had to stay home the next day. I didn’t see results right away and then, about a month later, my skin started to look really great. It had a really nice glow!”

On the sacrifice that keeps her looking young: “They say you have to sacrifice your ass for your face. It’s true! I’m probably a good 15 pounds overweight for my body size, but it helps my face! I barely have wrinkles. My face looks better with a little weight on me.”
