Britney Spears is no stranger to the spotlight, but 2020 has proven to present its own set of challenges for the 38 year-old pop star. Amid the public legal battle surrounding her conservatorship, Spears took to Instagram to speak on the toxic beauty standards she’s faced for most of her life.
“For the first time in my life I’m going without lots and lots of makeup,” she captions an up-close-and-personal video shared yesterday. “These clips show a closer look at my face …. which is very scary for me,” she says, noting her visible freckles.
This isn’t the first time Spears has opened up about her skin on Instagram. Last month, the singer gave us a glimpse into her long-time acne struggle, which she said began after her first movie. (More on that here.) However, Spears is now sharing a message with those also trudging through the world of comparison.
“Growing up in Hollywood can be hard !!!! It’s all about looks …. and the press can be pretty mean,” she says, offering up the questions often thrown her way: ‘“why does she look so old” … “why does she look so young” … “why is she too big” … “why is she too skinny,”’ she says. “As Selena Gomez says ….. the world can be a nasty place … kill them with kindness.”
