All eyes were on the royals this morning as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle finally said their vows in the stunning St. George’s Chapel at the historic Windsor Castle. Between her custom Givenchy gown, billowing veil and the diamond bandeau tiara on loan from the Queen to set it in place, the new Duchess of Sussex looked timeless as she walked down the aisle. Underneath the 16-foot long veil, however, was an effortless updo that’s broke with traditional royal wedding day tradition.

Royals including Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth have worn long waves to their wedding ceremonies—Princess Diana also let her hair down for her own nuptials—but Markle opted for a slightly more polished version of the chignon we’re used to seeing her sport, courtesy of renowned hairstylist Serge Normant. The center-parted bun rested at the nape of her neck and appeared thicker than her usual twist-and-go version, but her signature wispy, loose strands remained intact to frame the subdued makeup look created by celebrity makeup artist and long-time friend Daniel Martin.

The exact makeup Martin used has not been confirmed, but the Duchess’ autograph nude lip appears to be a bit lighter than her rumored favorite, Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Very Victoria. Because it’s been rumored the Queen finds bright shades of nail polish to be vulgar (she, herself, only wears one shade), Markle’s pale pink manicure follows royal protocol perfectly. Her skin was, as predicted, fresh and clean with her freckles on display, remaining authentic to the look she feels most confident in.
