Carpal tunnel syndrome, the painful compression of a major nerve in the hand, can affect people of any weight, but it’s especially prevalent in the obese. There are a number of treatments for carpal tunnel, ranging from anti-inflammatory drugs to surgery. However, experts have found that massive weight loss, whether by surgery or lifestyle changes, could be the cure for overweight sufferers.
A study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons analyzed the carpal tunnel experience of patients who lost 50 pounds or more. Of the 24 patients who were confirmed to have the syndrome and four who reported symptoms before their weight loss, all but three said their carpal tunnel was resolved after slimming down.
This finding had lead the ASPS researchers to advocate weight loss for carpal tunnel sufferers who are overweight and obese. And arguably, relief of these painful symptoms is only one of the many benefits of this approach.
