You may have read somewhere on the Internet that the average woman consumes seven pounds of lipstick during her lifetime.  It’s a myth that’s been debunked, but I don’t need studies or data to tell me something that I see every day: lipstick stains on my teeth, food and coffee cup rim, just to name a few places that the product regularly travels to. This type of makeup migration makes for some annoying beauty clean up, but what really makes me uneasy is that I’m confident I’m eating my lipstick—and all its mystery ingredients—even if it’s not seven pounds of it.

It doesn’t help the cause that many lipsticks have been tested and results have shown they contain hazardous colorants, irritants, endocrine disruptors and even carcinogens. Furthermore, unlike skin care products, lipstick ingredients are harder to find, if they’re even listed at all. Like many people, I love the look of lipstick (especially the matte liquid variety), but the combination of messy wear and suspect formulation has led me not to reach for them too often.

Recently, however, I was introduced to a brand-new line of liquid lipsticks, called Lawless, created by Annie Lawless, who also founded Suja Juice. For her new endeavor, Lawless formulated a line of liquid lipsticks that are always free (cheekily abbreviated to AF) of any known cancer-causing or endocrine-disrupting ingredients, including parabens, phthalates, sulfates, silicones, talc, BHA, fragrance, lead, mineral oil, aluminums—just to rattle off a few. In their place, Lawless sourced plant- and fruit-derived extracts and vegan waxes that mimics the same performance, look and feel as conventional products, without the downside. On my lips, the product feels as smooth, hydrating and lightweight as other top brands and gives a long-lasting, soft matte finish neither dries nor fades as the day progresses. The lineup of the first eight colors features universally flattering from the lightest beige to the darkest wine, so all skin tones and color preferences can find a product that works that’s both sexy and safe.
