Celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta’s client list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood. From Blake Lively and Karlie Kloss to Kim Kardashian West and Olivia Munn, there’s not a famous face Ta hasn’t touched.
Known for creating perfectly sculpted faces, he’s an equal master of an impeccable bold lip, something we will be seeing more of this season. “I love a bold lip for any occasion. It complements a radiant complexion and I’m obsessed with a healthy glow,” Ta told us. “And, if I need to get a client ready in a pinch, it’s the perfect way to make a chic statement fast!”

Whether he goes with a classic red lip or a dark berry stain, Ta nails it every single time. But getting the look at home yourself—and staying within the border of the lips—can be harder than it might seem. For starters, Ta says to pick a liner that’s the same shade as the lip color as this help the color stay on the lips longer and not bleed. “Also, a little bit of powder around the mouth can also help with set your lipstick, too,” he adds.
To find that just-right shade of lipstick, he explains that what you pick needs to complement the undertone of your skin—know if you are cool, warm or neutral. “This plays into finding the perfect lip shade. For example, if you have a cool undertone to your skin, lipsticks with blue or purple undertones will look best on you. If you make a mistake or go out of line, don’t worry and grab a flat, angled brush with some concealer or foundation to correct it.” Some of Ta’s favorite colors for a bold lip include: “Too Faced Melted Matte in Drop Dead Red ($21) for a dark, dramatic lip, Sephora Collection Cream Matte Lip Stain in Always Red ($14) because it just pops, and for a brown lip, I always choose True Brown by Kylie Cosmetics ($17).”
Consider yourself schooled in color theory.
