Sports fan girlies know one thing for sure: Fall is the time for a good baseball hat. From sun-scorched stadiums to your daily walk, just because autumn has officially arrived doesn’t mean the sun is going anywhere. Stay sun-safe while keeping your hair fun and flirty with these amazing fall hat hairstyles.
Football Season Means More Hats
It might be a popular belief that you don’t need as much sun protection in the fall and winter, but we know better.
“There are many common misconceptions about the importance of sunscreen and protecting your skin from the sun,” says Dr. Marc Hurlbert, CEO of Melanoma Research Alliance. “No matter if it’s a sunny or cloudy day, if you plan to stay indoors, or if you’re sitting by a window, in a plane, or in a car, it’s important to wear sunscreen daily—all year round—to protect yourself from harmful rays that can cause melanoma.”
Besides, you’re probably outside more often as the weather finally cools down, making it all the more important to keep your skin safe. Aside from wearing sunscreen, a hat provides shade and protection to keep our fan enthusiasm as high as possible.
From tailgating to nature walks, hats are essential to our fall getup. It’s just that we have no idea what to do with our hair. Thankfully, we spoke with pros about achieving the best hat hairstyles ahead.

Finding your ideal look out of all the hat hairstyles you could try doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, sometimes the simplest looks have the most impact.
“I love a simple braid pulled loosely through the back of a baseball hat opening,” explains Kerasilk ambassador and celebrity stylist Harry Josh. “I apply the Kerasilk Texturizing Finishing Spray ($32) prior, adding a natural texture/wave to the hair that shows through the formation of the braid.”
This look can easily shift to double pigtail braids, which keep your hair off your neck. You can also go with a simple ponytail, adding volume by separating the hair into two sections for added volume.
Easy Step-by-Step Guide
- Pick a way to part your hair and your preferred style
- Start with texturing spray for volume
- Begin styling; use a flat iron for sleek looks and embrace texture for fuller styles
- Put the hat on and play with the placement until you’re happy
- Smooth flyaways using a finishing spray or cream
The Hat Hairstyles Experts Love
If you’re like us, a hat hairstyle presents one problem: what to do with your bangs. But Josh says that styling bangs under a hat is one of his favorite looks.
“I love when a woman wears a hat with bangs,” he says. “It is a very 80s-inspired look, but you can visibly see their entire set of bangs when the hat is sitting up on the back of the head. To perfect this style, I often use the Kerasilk Finishing Cream ($32) to smooth any flyaways that may be sticking out on the side of the hat, as well as polish any dry ends.”
If you’re looking for an ultra-sleek look, you’ll want to address your ponytail as well.
“I sometimes will then flat iron the ponytail (using the Kerasilk Liquid Cuticle Filler ($34) first),” Josh explains. “Then I add a barrette at the base where the hat meets to add an extra finishing touch.”
And you don’t have to be married to a baseball hat. “I also love the look with a fedora hat; I find that it is a cool, modern way to make an old man’s hat look young and funky,” Josh adds. “For a hat like this, you can wear your hair down, simply air dried or with loose waves, apply the Kerasilk Curl Balm ($36) and you are good to go.”
