Fusing regal glamour with a modern edge, Chappell Roan delivered a major “big hair” beauty moment at tonight’s Grammys, and we have the details—down to her unwashed hair hack.
Crafted by celebrity hairstylist Dom Forletta, Roan’s show-stopping, all-down hair had the goal to “authentically match her, but bigger and better,” shares Forletta. “Each product we chose to use was intentional to tie the entire look together and make her stand out on the carpet.”
The from-the-start secret: Some unwashed strands. “We began with Chappell’s hair freshly air-dried and unwashed,” Forletta says. “This allows for a more natural texture, which we’ll enhance as we go.”
To remove excess oil and give lift, Forletta first sprayed Amika’s Perk Up Dry Shampoo directly to the roots. Next, he applied Amika’s Superfruit Star Hair Styling Oil to the ends of her hair. “This step provides heat protection, while adding shine and softness to the hair.”
“Next, I section the hair and begin curling, using the smallest barrel from the Wavytalk Curlmaker Pro. I alternate the direction of each curl to create maximum movement and texture. Once the hair is fully curled, I add an extra layer of texture by taking random sections and wrapping them around hair pins. I then gently flat iron over the pinned sections using the Wavytalk Vent Sesh to create more definition and texture. While doing this, I use my fingers to separate and loosen the curls.”
To amp up the volume and length, Forletta had pre-curled and styled Bellami Silk Seam Clip-In Hair Extensions in Cinnamon Mocha. “I clip them into Chappell’s hair for added fullness and dimension. After the extensions are in, I give the hair a final brush-through to blend everything together. This creates a cohesive, voluminous look.”
To complete the style, Forletta reached for Amika again, spraying the brand’s Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray throughout. “This adds extra volume, separation and a matte finish for more texture and fullness. Lastly, we completed the look with a modern victory roll that is loosely pinned back.”
