As Seen on the TODAY Show: 2024 Beauty Trends and 2023 Beauty in Review featured image

Though it may not seem real yet for many of us (myself included), 2024 is officially here, and with that comes a major shift in all things trends, routines and more. The beginning of the new year is often about personal transformation—picking resolutions, creating healthier habits—but in the world of beauty, it’s also a big time for addressing the shifts in major trends across the industry.

Staying at the forefront of what’s trending in the beauty world is something we pride ourselves on at NewBeauty, and as the years turn over, we’ve spent a lot of time analyzing what was hot in 2023 and predicting what will be next for 2024. Just last week, NewBeauty’s senior editor-at-large Sarah Eggenberger took to the TODAY show to walk through the biggest beauty trends of 2023 and give a sneak peak at what’s next for 2024. Ahead, our roundup of what’s trending both then and now and some products to help you keep your routine in the know.

At-Home Devices

Throughout recent years, skin care has become increasingly high-tech with products that allow for in-office level results with devices that can be used at home. From LED therapy and infrared light technology to blue light, microcurrent and galvanic current treatments, the high-tech options to lift, firm and minimize fine lines with at-home tools are now endless. Luckily for us, clinical trials are now fairly common when it comes to skin-care devices, which is a must in order to weed out which devices are going to deliver the results you want from those that aren’t. Keep in mind, though, that no innovative tool is worthwhile unless you’re willing to use it consistently or as often as suggested, and many of them can boast a high price tag. So before you commit and click “add to cart,” be realistic about your schedule and skin-care habits.

Simplified Skin-Care Routines

Whether it’s product fatigue, the overly saturated market, or a concern about excess waste, tons of consumers are looking to streamline their skin-care routines and cut out unnecessary steps. The days of 12-step regimens seem to be left behind us—but to each their own—and formulas that address multiple skin concerns are stepping up to fill the gap. Skin-care minimalism is way more approachable and straightforward than lengthy routines as it touts less superfluous products and emphasizes on efficiency to help your skin perform its vital functions at the highest level without the extra fluff. Less was more in 2023, so consider this the ideal time to purge your beauty cabinet and eliminate everything except the essentials. If you’re looking to trim down your routine, here are some top-tier products to incorporate into your A.M. and P.M. regimens.

What’s Next in 2024

Everything Red

2023 was the year of pink with Barbiecore, but the hangover to Barbie pink will be red as we’ve already begun to see the color coming to the forefront towards the end of 2023, and it will only continue to be important for spring in a classic manner. Some places that we’ll be seeing red are on your nails and lips, but we also predict that this striking shade will be coupled with short nails while the classic red lip turned into a “revenge lip.”

Dior Beauty Rouge Lipstick ($49)

So iconic, it is known just by its name, the Dior 999 lip shade has accrued a long list of devoted fans over the years. Not only does it look beautiful on every skin tone, the formula happens to also last up to 16 hours per wear. C-Sculpt Blush

You’ve no doubt seen blush placement rising from the cheeks to the cheekbones all over your TikTok FYP, and the technique isn’t going anywhere in 2024. High, C-sculpt blush essentially utilizes a contouring technique but with blush versus bronzer so that the pigment “lifts” the face, giving the appearance of higher cheekbones. To achieve the look, apply blush in a ‘C’ shape, starting from the temple area and down towards the cheekbones, then up and slightly over the outer edges of your brows.

Big, Bold Hair

According to Pinterest’s 2024 beauty and style predictions, beauty, hair and jewelry will get bigger and bolder in 2024. We’ve already seen signs of this on the runways, and we’re fully on board. It is also anticipated that Millennials and Gen Z will reach for oversized opulence to perfectly pair with the trending fluffy hair aesthetics. In fact, Pinterest suspects a 230 percent increase in “big bun” searches, so keep an eye out for a spike in interest in “big braid hairstyles” and “wavy perm men” as well.

Achieving a glamorously full head of hair might feel downright impossible—particularly if you have fine, thin or thinning hair—but there are a few tips and tricks you can whip out to instantly boost volume. In fact, you might be surprised at just how much volume you can create.

What to Try

11 / 13

Drybar High Tops Self-Grip Rollers ($12)

While we long thought velcro rollers a thing of the past, utilizing hair rollers to achieve voluminous blowouts has made quite the comeback recently. To maximize volume, break out some velcro rollers after blow-drying. Blow-dry each section and wrap them in velcro rollers and let it cool for 15 minutes before taking them out, and voila!

12 / 13

Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray ($14)

Texturizing sprays are some of the latest and greatest innovations in hair-boosting technology. While often used to create better hold for hairstyles, this handy hair-care product also creates lift and volume. Start at the crown, hold your roots up and spray the powder at the base of the root. Repeat until the desired amount is in your hair, then rub it in gently with your fingers. You can wear your hair down or style it afterward. Either way, this technique leaves hair at the root slightly gritty, which allows you to re-puff your hair as needed.

13 / 13

Madison Reed Root Touch Up ($32)

An exposed scalp can make your hair look thin, as can gray roots, which create the illusion of a wider scalp. A root concealer—also known as a scalp foundation—can tackle both all with very little effort required on your end.
