Fake Your Freckles

Thanks to some pretty out-of-the-box beauty trends, one of the latest to land on U.S. shores is faux freckles. While there are plenty of women who want to cover or eliminate their natural freckles, this trend may make them think twice. According to Benefit Cosmetics makeup master Jose Rivera, to achieve the look, which works on just about every skin tone, take note of any natural freckle patterns in your skin and enhance them. “If you don’t have any freckles, place them on you nose and cheeks and a few in the center of your forehead. Use waterproof cream or gel pencils in neutral tones to create fake freckles so they stay put all day.”

Goth Makeup Is Back

Remember the makeup of the 1990s? It was all about dark, vampy colors in shades of deep plums, browns and black. Spotted all over the fall 2016 runway shows, goth-inspired makeup is back. But this time around, it’s more luxe and glamorous. “It’s all about deep berry lips in matte textures, which is different from the grungy style of the ’90s,” says Sarah Lucero, celebrity makeup artist  and global executive director of creative artistry for Stila Cosmetics. If you’re going to jump on the trend, pair matte lips with dewy skin for a look that’s fresh and radiant. “Add a pop of shine on your cheekbones or eyelids and lots of mascara. The mix of textures is important in making the makeup feel modern,” adds Lucero.

The Bacteria-Free Makeup Brush

One of the downsides to constantly using your makeup brushes is the potential for bacteria to grow on the bristles, which can accelerate signs of aging and instigate breakouts. Washing them with antibacterial soap and letting them air-dry is the best way to prevent bacteria buildup. Or, you can use a brush that’s designed to resist bacteria, like Michael Todd’s sonicBLEND ($99). The first of its kind, this rechargeable brush contains a special antimicrobial guard in its bristles that won’t wear or wash off. “This protects the brush from 99 percent of bacteria that form on makeup applicators and brushes,” says Erica Parker, educational director at Michael Todd Beauty. “Plus, the sonic power allows for powder and liquid makeup to be applied better than a rotary makeup brush or other applicators because the sonic action disperses granules of makeup in fine, even layers on the skin for an airbrushed effect.”

The Shiniest Shadow Ever!

While matte makeup is still in, eye shadow
with shimmer and shine is re-emerging after a hiatus. Most shimmer shadows
offer some sort of subtle dimension, but Urban Decay Moondust Palette ($49) really
ups the ante. A new innovation in makeup, each of the eight shades contains
microfine bits of iridescent sparkle and pearlescene for a look you’ve
never seen—think multidimensional shine with a 3-D effect that’s way
more sophisticated than your typical glitter shadow. And, even though the
shadows are powder-based, they almost feel like a cream when they’re
applied, which delivers serious color payoff (even more so when you apply them
wet).
