Everybody has a bout with bad skin—it’s inevitable. Even the gorgeous women of Hollywood with glowing skin who never seem to have a breakout or a pimple, worry about adult acne. As Natalie Portman confesses to The Cut, she’s found that the only way to really clear up her skin problems is through her dietary choices.

To beat the battle of the breakouts, the 36-year-old actress made a major lifestyle change six years ago that is said to have a multitude of health benefits, including better skin. “I’m vegan and I found my skin is much, much better than when I was a vegetarian,” says Portman. “I cut out dairy and eggs, and I never had a breakout after. That was definitely a discovery. It’s personal; everyone has different sensitivity. I also did it when I was 30, so it might have been an age thing.”
The longtime vegetarian (she’s been meat-free since she was 8 years old) told Harper’s Bazaar how she’s made the necessary adjustments to this tweak in her diet. “I’m vegan, so I generally have a very clean diet; I usually have oatmeal or avocado toast in the morning. And Mother’s Milk tea because I’m breast-feeding. Normally I don’t have caffeine, but when I’m working I’ll drink coffee if I’m tired. I feel like it’s kind of psychological because I don’t think I’m that affected by it,” shared the Oscar winner. “I take vitamins too—vitamin D, and I’m still on prenatal vitamins. I get B12 shots once a month because it’s the one thing you don’t get from a vegan diet.”
