A plump, juicy lip is always in style. According to celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, creating a more voluminous-looking pout is as easy as one, two, three.
During a recent launch event celebrating the debut of his latest brainchild, the Makeup by Mario Ultra Suede Sculpting Lip Pencil ($22), Dedivanovic explained the how-to behind his signature “Lip Lift” technique, made famous by A-list muses such as Kim Kardashian West. The best part, aside from the easy factor: All that’s required to nail the technique for yourself is a mirror and your favorite lip liner.
Unlike other overlining techniques, which focus on overlining the entire lip with a pencil, Dedivanovic’s method is all about overlining in two specific areas.
Step one, according to the makeup master, is using the lip liner to slightly overline right above your cupid’s bow, then following the natural shape of your lip as you extend to the corners of the mouth, making sure not to overline this area. Then, fill in the corners of the top lip before moving to the bottom lip.
On the bottom lip, overline only the center of the lip, mirroring your work on the top lip. “Trace the natural line of your lip upwards towards the corner to create a lifted appearance,” he instructs. If you made a mistake or created a not-so-precise line, Dedivanovic suggests using the brush on the opposite side of his new lip liners to smooth any lines. The last step: top with your go-to lipstick.
