According to People, actress Kathryn Hahn likes to keep things simple. “I rarely wear makeup in my real life. A lot of the roles that I have done recently, I wear little-to-no makeup,” she says. But, embracing her natural self has taken some time.

Admitting she used to pile on foundation when she went through a “goth period” as a teen, the 47-year-old says, “I wore more makeup when I was in my 20’s. I feel like I’m wearing less and less the older I get.” Teen phases aside, a big reason behind Hahn’s makeup obsession was the fact that she was dealing with cystic acne, which continued until she was in her late forties.

“Acne really does something to your self-esteem, especially when you’re on camera,” Hahn tells People. “Once that started clearing up, I definitely felt more comfortable not wearing makeup.” Now, Hahn says her 11-year-old daughter wears more makeup than she does. “I think that she wishes I had makeup on all the time. She wishes she had a more glamorous mother,” Hahn says. “She’s always like, ‘Can you brush your hair today?’ And I’m like, ‘I know.’ She always wishes I had color on my nails.”

Her daily lineup consists of a cleanser, toner, serums, and face oil—not one bit of makeup in sight. With her focus away from acne and towards her health, Hahn says she’s been spending her time perfecting her skin-care routine and taking care of her body through exercise.
